Abstract
For University of Limerick’s “UnLeash Your Best” campaign, LAUDHAUS created a soundtrack built entirely from recorded sounds of elite athletes in action. Breath, impact, movement and exertion were transformed into music, creating a visceral and emotionally charged audio experience rooted in real performance.
Description
“UnLeash Your Best” is a campaign for University of Limerick Sport built around a simple idea: with the right environment, support and community, people can unlock their full potential. The film follows six elite UL Sports Scholarship athletes – Olympians, All-Stars, record breakers and rising stars of Irish sport – as they train across UL’s world-class facilities.
Rather than approaching the campaign like a traditional sports film with cinematic stock music or an orchestral score, LAUDHAUS wanted the soundtrack itself to come directly from the athletes and the environment around them. Every musical element in the campaign was created using recordings captured on campus during filming. Hurleys scraping dressing room floors, medicine balls slamming concrete, boxing gloves hitting bags, rowing strokes, footsteps, breathing, clashes, smacks and splashes were all recorded and transformed into rhythm, percussion and texture.
The result was a completely bespoke soundtrack composed entirely from the real sounds of elite athletes pushing themselves physically and mentally. The process began by capturing a large library of sounds across UL’s sports facilities. These recordings were then edited, layered and manipulated into musical compositions in collaboration with Choice Prize-winning artist and producer MuRli. Rather than polishing away imperfections, the production embraced the grit, strain and physicality of performance, allowing the soundtrack to feel raw, human and immediate. This approach gave the film a level of realism and emotional connection that conventional sports music could not achieve. Every sound heard in the soundtrack came from genuine athletic effort. The athletes themselves became the instruments.
The campaign also reinforced the core message of UL Sport. The soundtrack was not imposed onto the film afterwards; it emerged directly from the environment, facilities and people that define the university’s high-performance culture. The final result was an emotionally charged audio-led campaign that blurred the line between sound design, music production and storytelling, creating a distinctive sensory experience rooted entirely in real human performance.
