Abstract
Reimagining the Sound of Necesse was part of a larger overhaul that expanded and evolved the early sound design by Necesse creator ‘Fair’ during the game’s initial solo development phase. The goal was to balance aesthetic immersion with practical gameplay communication, ensuring that sound both enriches the world and supports the player’s actions.
Description
The aim of ”Reimagining the Sound of Necesse” was to support a clear, immersive, and functional gameplay experience of Necesse. During early development, the sound design contributed to a more functional approach, where audio primarily served to communicate mechanics clearly. As a sound designer, Rune focused on establishing clarity and feedback, ensuring that every action (combat, crafting, exploration) is immediately understandable through sound.
-
Immersion: Creating an atmospheric audio environment that enhances the game’s procedurally generated world.
-
Create Consistency: Maintaining a cohesive sonic identity across music and sound effects.
-
Efficiency: Designing sounds that remain effective even in busy, multi-entity gameplay situations.
The sound design was created by means of a large self-created sound library consisting of multiple source materials from which Rune could fabricate the needed SFX.
