Abstract

Bocconi University, the first academic institution to develop its own sonic identity, has created a sound that strengthens the emotional connection with its community. KOE’s approach transformed the name “Bocconi” into musical notes, generating a melody that evolves and expands, reflecting the university’s core values: multiculturalism, community, research, and innovation. The blend of traditional sounds, deep basses, and futuristic tones makes the sound distinctive, creating an immediate and memorable connection. With this sonic identity, Bocconi reaffirms its long-term vision and its commitment to staying at the forefront of university communication.

Description

Bocconi is redefining the concept of academic sonic identity with a sound branding strategy that is more than just a musical logo—it is an authentic and distinctive sonic language. Moving beyond standardized solutions, this project merges tradition and innovation to reflect the university’s history, values, and international vocation.

The sound logo originates from the structure of the name “Bocconi”: the letters B, C, and C, translatable into musical notes, form the main melody, enriched by rhythmic elements corresponding to the other letters. This composition results in a layered soundscape: the piano symbolizes academic tradition, synth pads evoke an innovative drive, ambient sounds immerse listeners in the dynamic atmosphere of Milan, and handclaps represent the Bocconi community.

The strategic approach goes beyond simple sonic recognition—the sound branding is designed to seamlessly integrate across multiple university touchpoints. From digital services to institutional events, from on-hold phone experiences to immersive physical spaces, each sound reinforces a sense of belonging and guides users through an engaging and memorable journey.

What sets this project apart from other university sound branding initiatives is its ability to merge emotion and strategy: sound is not just a distinctive element but a tool that narrates and strengthens Bocconi’s identity. More than a simple sonic signature, it is an emotional code that connects, engages, and leaves a lasting impression.
