Abstract
SonicEdge’s SC100 is a chip-scale MEMS speaker that replaces 150-year-old speaker principles with ultrasonic modulation. It delivers high-fidelity audio from a minute form factor, eliminating size-performance trade-offs traditional speakers face and unlocking a new generation of ultra-compact, high-performing wearable devices.
Description
The SC100 represents a paradigm shift in how sound is generated and how audio hardware is manufactured, addressing long-standing limitations imposed by conventional voice-coil speakers. For over a century, speakers have relied on magnetic coils and moving membranes to generate sound – a design that inherently constrains how small, efficient, and high-performing audio devices can be.
SonicEdge replaced this architecture with a chip-scale MEMS-based solution. At the SC100’s core are ultra-thin membranes – less than 10 micrometers thick – operating at frequencies of up to 400,000 cycles per second. These membranes generate ultrasound, which it then demodulates into audible sound across the full frequency range. This entirely new operating principle enables high-fidelity audio without the need for magnets, coils, or other traditional mechanical components.
