Abstract

OmniMusic is redefining music-making through accessible technology, adapted instruments and specialist training. From eye-gaze systems to wheelchair joysticks, we turn assistive tools into instruments, enabling Disabled people to create the music that matters to them.

Description

OmniMusic is an award-winning specialist music charity based in Greater Manchester, working exclusively within the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) space. We support Disabled children, young people and adults, alongside their teachers and support staff, to access the full benefits of music in both their learning and leisure time.

We believe that everyone has the right to participate in cultural life and express themselves creatively, regardless of their ability. However, many Disabled people remain excluded from cultural participation due to inaccessible environments, limited training and lack of available specialist tools and technology needed to support their needs. Our work addresses this inequality directly through innovative use of Assistive Music Technology (AMT) and inclusive approaches.

Using adapted instruments, MIDI technology, motion sensors, switch interfaces and custom-built accessible systems, we enable participants with a wide range of physical, sensory and learning needs to create and perform music independently. We also adapt existing technologies already used by participants, including eye-gaze systems and powered wheelchair joysticks, transforming them into expressive musical tools. Our solution combines cutting-edge technology with inclusive creative practice to remove barriers to participation and place Disabled people at the centre of music-making.

Alongside delivering accessible music sessions, we train teachers, support staff and organisations in the use of inclusive music technology, helping to build lifelong skills, confidence and sustainability across the SEND sector. We encourage ambition and excellence in the music we make together, ensuring that sessions are enjoyable and accessible for everyone. Our experienced team of professional musicians, music therapists and creative technologists has over 20 years’ experience in inclusive music-making.

The social and cultural impact of this work is significant. For many participants, music becomes a rare space where they can exercise agency, make creative choices and be recognised for their talents and achievements. Beyond musical outcomes, our sessions support communication, confidence, emotional wellbeing and social connection, helping individuals who are often excluded from cultural life to participate fully within their communities. Through innovation, accessibility and creativity, OmniMusic is redefining inclusion in music.
