Abstract
Arcana Strum is an inclusive digital musical instrument that enables people of all abilities to actively create and perform music. Used in education, therapy, and rehabilitation, it removes barriers to music participation through adaptive technology and accessible design.
Description
Arcana Strum was created to address a major gap in music education and participation: millions of people with physical disabilities, neurological conditions, developmental challenges, or limited mobility are unable to play traditional musical instruments. While music is known to support emotional wellbeing, cognitive development, rehabilitation, and social connection, access to active music-making remains limited for many individuals.
Arcana Instruments set out to develop a solution that would remove these barriers and enable anyone, regardless of ability or prior musical experience, to participate meaningfully in music creation and performance.
The result is the Arcana Strum, an adaptive digital musical instrument designed from the ground up for accessibility, inclusivity, and ease of use. The instrument allows users to create rich musical experiences immediately through intuitive interaction methods that can be customized to individual abilities. Unlike conventional instruments that often require years of technical training and fine motor skills, Arcana Strum focuses on enabling expression, creativity, and participation from the very first interaction.
The development process involved close collaboration with therapists, educators, musicians, rehabilitation professionals, and individuals with disabilities. The design evolved through extensive real-world testing in schools, therapy environments, community programs, and rehabilitation settings. A key objective throughout development was maintaining musical authenticity while dramatically lowering the physical and cognitive barriers required to perform music.
An important aspect of the project is the instrument’s adaptability. Arcana Strum supports integration with external accessibility devices, switches, and assistive technologies, allowing it to accommodate a broad range of physical and cognitive abilities. The instrument is suitable for use in music therapy, special education, rehabilitation, elderly care, autism support programs, and inclusive community music initiatives.
Beyond accessibility, Arcana Strum introduces new possibilities through its digital architecture. Interactions with the instrument can be measured and analyzed, enabling therapists and educators to monitor engagement, progress, movement, and participation. This creates opportunities for evidence-based therapeutic and educational applications that are difficult to achieve with traditional instruments.
The results have demonstrated significant impact. Individuals who were previously unable to participate in music-making are now able to independently create, perform, and collaborate musically. Teachers and therapists report increased engagement, motivation, confidence, communication, and social interaction among users. The instrument has also helped create more inclusive music environments where participants of different abilities can perform together.
Arcana Strum has received international recognition for its innovation and social contribution, including the MIDI Innovation Award and the Global EdTech Startup Award (GES Award). The project continues to expand globally through collaborations with educators, therapists, accessibility organizations, and music technology communities working toward a more inclusive future for music participation.
