A new study explores how effectively UX sounds in electronic consumer products communicate their intended functions to users. Researchers worked with experts to identify common functional goals for UX sounds and then tested 120 sounds with 234 participants from the UK and Germany. The analysis revealed key dimensions of functional meanings, leading to the creation of FMUX, a standardized tool for evaluating UX sound communication. While limited by sample size and sound diversity, the study provides a foundation for future research using techniques like Music Information Retrieval and Machine Learning.
