Abstract
AMF Fastigheter’s new headquarters at Mood Stockholm integrates innovative sound design by Efterklang, creating a unique, seasonal-themed workspace. This project enhances employee well-being and productivity through tailored soundscapes, making it a standout example of modern office design.
Description
AMF Fastigheter, one of Sweden’s largest real estate companies, relocated their headquarters to their own shopping mall Mood Stockholm, reflecting their commitment to staying connected with the city and its tenants. The new 1,400 m² office is designed to support openness, interaction, and inspiration. The space is divided into three zones: private open-plan offices, collaborative areas, and open zones that connect directly to the shopping center. To bring the environment to life, AMF partnered with Efterklang to create a tailored sound design aligned with three seasonal themes: Autumn, Spring, and Summer. Each zone’s visual and acoustic identity is carefully matched to foster different types of work and moods.
Autumn (open zones) is bold and social, enriched with dub-techno-inspired beats, rustling leaves, and subtle environmental layers. Spring (collaborative areas) is light and playful, pairing greenery and pastel interiors with gentle acoustic music and uplifting nature sounds. Summer (private open-plan offices) features Efterklang’s custom nature-based sound masking system, using serene recordings from Swedish forests to mask distractions and support concentration. Each playlist features thousands of manually curated songs, thoughtfully scheduled throughout the week and continuously reviewed and updated to stay fresh and avoid ever feeling repetitive.
Even restrooms received thoughtful soundscapes: nature sounds and instrumental music in Summer areas, moody jazz and rain in Autumn, and cheerful 80s or reggae tracks in Spring. These elements turn mundane moments into delightful, memorable experiences. The design challenge wasn’t to fix a noise problem, but to prevent one—and to show that sound, when used creatively, becomes a powerful part of place-making. This project pushes office design forward by integrating auditory experience from the very beginning.
