Abstract

A sonic identity for Banco de España that turns institutional stability into a warm, contemporary and human sound system, built around a memorable audio logo and deployable across podcasts, videos, events, phone services and digital touchpoints.

Description

Banco de España is one of Spain’s most symbolic public institutions: solid, rigorous, historic and essential, but also increasingly open, accessible and close to citizens. The project asked a deceptively simple question: what should an institution of this nature sound like today? The Sonic You created a complete sonic identity system designed to express trust, clarity, stability and proximity without falling into solemnity, cliché or corporate neutrality.

The ambition was not to compose a nice piece of music, but to build a long-term sonic language: recognisable, flexible and institutionally appropriate. The process began with strategic research, brand analysis, competitive listening and sound psychology. Together with an internal working group from Banco de España, we defined a sonic territory based on four principles: stability over impact, warmth over distance, clarity over ornamentation and timelessness over trend.

The sonic identity captures and emphasises the human, close and warm aspect of the institution, with a simple and elegant instrumentation, led by the guitar. Inspired by a ‘non-obvious Spanishness’, it conveys proximity and subtle nods to traditional folklore. A soft, meandering melody, played by another guitar, adds emotional warmth and reinforces the sense of openness and public service. The relaxed, gently fluctuating rhythm evokes a fluid and accessible dialogue between the Bank and society, while details such as the breathing and fretting of the guitar add realism and authenticity.

To extend its versatility, the track features variations with background strings that evoke tradition and commitment to public service, and vocals that bring humanity and connection. Modern percussion elements inspired by trip-hop add innovative rhythmic patterns that balance the classic and the contemporary, reflecting the Bank’s spirit of innovation without losing its institutional essence.

The final system includes the audio logo, a core sonic universe, a branded music library structured around four themes, adaptations for priority touchpoints and implementation guidelines. Its first public declination was the Banco de España podcast Cien x Cien, followed by progressive deployment across audiovisual pieces, events, phone environments, digital channels and institutional communications. The project also became an internal engagement tool. The final audio logo was selected through BDE Fest 2025, an internal vote involving 3,400 employees, turning sonic identity into a participatory act of institutional culture.
