Abstract
Listen for Life is a globally supported healthy hearing campaign transforming sound culture in the music and entertainment community. Created by the music and entertainment industry, it promotes safe, enjoyable listening, accessibility, and innovation—protecting hearing for those who work in or enjoy music rich spaces, while enabling inclusive, high-quality music experiences for all.
Description
Listen for Life (LFL) is a UK-led hearing conservation initiative addressing sound-induced hearing loss across music, nightlife, and entertainment. Backed by global and industry stakeholders including the International Nightlife Association and the World Health Organisation’s World Hearing Forum, the campaign is being scaled internationally. The initiative builds on over 30 years of work in auditory health conservation. Early experience revealed resistance within creative industries to externally imposed regulation. In response, LFL was developed by the industry, for the industry, ensuring relevance, trust, and adoption.
As the WHO have estimated that over 1 Bn younger adults are at risk of injury to their hearing as a result of recreational sound, LFL unique and unrivalled as it is the first of its kind program, structured around awareness, protection, and testing, LFL aims to reduce hearing loss by 50% among young adults. It aligns with and is supported by the World Health Organization’s World Hearing Forum, reinforcing the WHO Global Standard on safe listening venues and events.
The campaign operates through education, training, and policy engagement, alongside its “Listen for Life Charter,” enabling organisations to adopt hearing-safe practices. Early adopters include major venues demonstrating strong industry uptake. One defining feature is LFL’s endorsement of next-generation hearing diagnostics. Moving beyond traditional hearing tests that detects hearing loss only after it occurs, LFL promotes advanced testing capable of identifying structural changes in the ear caused by excessive sound exposure.
This enables early, proactive intervention before measurable hearing loss or tinnitus develops. Strategic partnerships with organisations including Specsavers and Tinnitus UK strengthen delivery. Beyond protection, LFL also advances accessibility—exploring technologies that allow people with hearing loss, or from the deaf community, to experience music in new ways.
LFL is now evolving into a national framework, with UK cities adopting the initiative. Nottingham became the first Listen for Life City on World Hearing Day 2026, with local authority and Business Improvement District support encouraging venues and businesses to implement hearing-safe practices. The Greater London Assembly has passed a motion to make London a Listen for Life City, with additional UK cities preparing to adopt the model. Other accreditation organisations such as Purple Guide, Purple Flag and Best Bar None have also embedded LFL into their guidance—creating a scalable pathway for national and international rollout.
